Early Voting Begins for MSCS Board, Primary Elections in Shelby County

The early voting period for the upcoming primary and county-wide general elections in Shelby County has started on July 12 and will run through till July 27. This crucial election will address the selection of the Shelby County General Sessions Court Clerk and the election of members for five Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) board positions. Party primaries for both federal and state races will also be held simultaneously.

Candidates for Court Clerk and School Board Positions

Tami Sawyer, a former Shelby County Commission member and Memphis mayoral candidate, is the Democratic candidate for the position of Court Clerk, while Lisa Arnold is representing the Republican party. The election for the five school board seats has attracted an impressive number of 21 candidates, four of whom are incumbents.

Eligibility to Vote

Everyone eligible to vote in the county primary election and presidential primary can vote during this early voting period. However, to vote in the primary, one must hold a valid resident status in Shelby County and a valid voter registration. The eligibility of voter registration can be checked through the Tennessee Secretary of State’s website.

Early Voting: Location and Timings

The county has set-up early voting locations scattered across Shelby County. These locations will remain open from Monday to Saturday. They function from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Monday through Friday while their operating hours on the first and second Saturday of early voting, namely July 13 and July 20, will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The last Saturday of early voting, July 27, they will be operational from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Voting at the Shelby County Election Commission

The Shelby County Election Commission stands as an exception to these timings. Open on weekdays from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Saturday’s 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., early voting takes place at the Election Commission’s Downtown location in the James Meredith Building which is situated at 157 Poplar Ave.

Some locations include the Abundant Grace Fellowship Church, Anointed Temple of Praise, Arlington Safe Room, Baker Community Center, Briarwood Church, Collierville Church of Christ, Compassion Church, Dave Wells Community Center, Ed Rice Community Center, Gaisman Community Center, and more.
