Early this morning in Tipton County, Tennessee, a high-speed pursuit escalated to involve stolen trucks and live gunfire. As events unfolded, the chase resulted in a suspect being apprehended, while two others remain at large.
At around 1:40 a.m., on a quiet stretch of Tabb Drive in Munford, local deputies spotted a grey Volvo SUV traveling without headlights. The SUV was accompanied by two Summit Roofing trucks. Given the suspicious nature of the trio’s movements and the time of day, the deputies suspected that the trucks had likely been stolen, and the Volvo was involved in the alleged crime.
Upon attempting to stop all three vehicles, both the Volvo and one of the Summit Roofing trucks immediately sped off, initiating a high-speed pursuit. In an alarming turn of events, the suspect or suspects inside the vehicles fired a shot, turning an already tense situation into a dangerous pursuit.
With the assistance of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and the Tennessee Highway Patrol, deputies succeeded in apprehending the driver of the Volvo and bringing the SUV to a halt on Sam Cooper near Perkins.
Meanwhile, one of the stolen Summit trucks was last seen heading into Southaven and has since been recovered in Mississippi. A second Summit truck was discovered abandoned behind a local shopping center, seemingly discarded in haste.
Upon searching the apprehended Volvo, deputies discovered gun ammunition and 16 grams of methamphetamine. However, the actual firearm used in the gunfire during the pursuits was not found.
The apprehended suspect has been identified as Herbert McKnatt of Bartlett, Tennessee. Charges presented against the 31-year-old include Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, Felony Reckless Endangerment, and Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Deliver.
McKnatt is currently held in Tipton County jail, awaiting his bond hearing from General Sessions Judge M. O. Eckel.
While one suspect is in custody, two others believed to be involved remain at large. Details about them are sparse at this stage. The manhunt is ongoing and authorities encourage anyone with potential information to come forward to assist.
The prompt response and dedication of the local law enforcement demonstrate their commitment to keeping the community safe. By persisting in their pursuit even amidst gunfire, they serve as a reminder of the risks they willingly face to safeguard public welfare.
