Terrence J shared his experiences and provided advice on financial literacy and the importance of networking. The event also featured a lively Q&A session where attendees connected with the media powerhouse, leaving motivated to pursue their dreams.
Memphis was buzzing with excitement as students and faculty gathered to hear insights from the media powerhouse, Terrence J, during a special presentation on February 27th. This event was part of the University of Memphis’ diverse lineup for Black History Month, beautifully organized by the Office of Multicultural Affairs. With a career that sails through hosting, acting, and even authoring, it was no surprise that the atmosphere was charged with anticipation.
Terrence J, whose real name is Terrence Jenkins, is widely recognized for his vibrant co-hosting role on BET’s popular show 106 & Park. He took the opportunity to share his personal journey, highlighting the rocky path he navigated to find success in the competitive world of media. With a degree in Journalism and Mass Communications from North Carolina A&T State University in 2004, he has forged a career filled with notable achievements, including acting roles in films like Think Like a Man and Think Like a Man Too, and earning an Oscar in 2021 for executive producing the short film Two Distant Strangers.
During his presentation, the audience was treated to a treasure trove of wisdom surrounding themes such as perseverance, personal branding, and the importance of seizing opportunities in college and beyond. Terrence J emphasized networking and the power of maintaining meaningful relationships. He sprinkled in some intriguing topics about financial literacy, stressing how vital it is for students to understand how to manage their finances in today’s world.
He shared eye-opening personal stories from his early ambitions, the mistakes he encountered, particularly around money management and understanding the financial landscape, including new trends like cryptocurrency. The message was clear: educating yourself on these topics can shape your future significantly.
As he spoke to the eager crowd, Terrence J inspired everyone to embrace risks in their careers and to be proactive in pursuing their passions. He reinforced that everyone’s journey is different, and it’s not about how you start, but about how you finish. Growing up as an only child in challenging circumstances, he drew strength from his experiences, especially from the absence of a father figure, transforming that hardship into determination and drive.
He painted the real picture of success—that it won’t simply fall into your lap. It demands hard work, resilience, and a willingness to leap at every opportunity. The refrain that success comes from personal effort resonated deeply, encouraging attendees to create their own pathways to victory.
The event concluded on an interactive note, with students engaging in a lively Q&A session. Many were eager to ask questions that sparked reflective conversations. Participants left with memorable experiences, snapping photos with the star, making the entire evening not just an educational session, but a chance to connect with someone who has walked a similar path and emerged victorious.
The energy in the room was undeniable as Terrence J encouraged attendees not to give up on their aspirations and dreams. Believing that “the universe is always telling you yes,” he reminded everyone that while there may be countless “no’s” from those around, it’s your perseverance that will ultimately propel you forward.
The event was a heartwarming reminder of the strength of community, ambition, and the importance of celebrating Black history, culture, and achievements. The University of Memphis delivered yet another impactful event that left students feeling motivated and ready to chase their dreams.
