Tree Trimming Efforts Boost Power Reliability in Memphis

Memphis, Tenn. – It’s a huge relief for Memphis residents who frequently worry about power outages due to severe weather. The latest news from Memphis Light Gas & Water (MLGW) is that tree-related power outages have dropped by nearly 80% this year. This promising statistic comes as the city braces for the impact of Tropical Storm Francine, which could bring significant rain and wind later this week.

Why the Change?

According to MLGW President Doug McGowen, the utility has implemented a more effective tree trimming strategy by hiring three new tree contractors in September of 2023. Since then, these teams have already trimmed 45 out of 126 sections in areas served by MLGW. This proactive approach is ahead of the utility’s goals and shows their commitment to improving service reliability.

Staggering Statistics

So, just how much of an impact has this focused effort made? The numbers speak for themselves! In 2024, MLGW has recorded only 52 circuit outages related to trees. For comparison, the same period in 2023 saw a staggering 239 outages. This marks a reduction of 78%, a testament to how effective the trimming has been.

But it’s not just about reducing outages. The total time customers experience without power has also decreased. In 2024, customers have had an average total outage time of just 3.64 hours, which is down from 5.41 hours last year. Even the frequency of interruptions is down, with the average customer now facing just 1.28 outages per year, a slight drop from last year’s 1.5.

Preparing for Francine

Tropical Storm Francine is expected to make its way into the Memphis area late Wednesday and Thursday, bringing 2 to 4 inches of rain and possible wind gusts of up to 40 mph. With these conditions, MLGW remains on high alert. The company reassured residents that crews are ready to work around the clock if necessary. “We are always prepared to deal with weather-related outages,” the utility stated.

Managing the Risks

While MLGW is optimistic about their preparedness and responsiveness, McGowen mentioned the risks that severe weather still poses. “The unfortunate part is that even with our trimming efforts, we can’t prevent very large trees and heavy limbs from coming down,” he shared. MLGW typically trims only 10 to 15 feet from the power lines, and with heavy rains and saturated ground, there’s only so much they can do to mitigate risks.

A Big Thank You!

As Tropical Storm Francine approaches, Memphis residents can take a moment to appreciate the hard work MLGW has put into reducing power outages. It’s a great feeling knowing that between improved tree trimming and prepared utility crews, there’s a stronger chance that your lights will stay on when Mother Nature strikes.

So, while we may not have control over the weather, knowing that MLGW is on top of things helps us rest a little easier. Stay tuned to local updates, and let’s keep those fingers crossed for a manageable storm!
