In the build-up to the 2024 United States presidential elections, doubts about current President, Joe Biden’s mental sharpness have intensified, leading to an uptick in support for former President, Donald Trump. Following Biden’s less-than-stellar performance in a June 27 debate, Trump now holds a four-point lead over Biden among registered voters, according to the Pew Research Center.
The study revealed that 44% of registered voters would vote for Trump if the election were held today. Biden has the support of 40% of voters while 15% support third-party candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Further, only about a quarter of voters (24%) believe that the description “mentally sharp” applies well to Biden, compared to 58% of voters who described Trump in the same way.
While Trump remains ahead in the polls, both candidates are described by voters as flawed but in different ways. A resounding 68% of voters expressed dissatisfaction with their choices for the presidency. Trump surpasses Biden on honesty, empathy, and mean-spiritedness. The study discovered that 64% of voters describe Trump as “mean-spirited”, a characteristic only 31% attribute to Biden.
Biden and Trump alike are commonly described as “embarrassing”, a sentiment shared by a substantial 63% of voters for each candidate. Even among each candidates’ supporters, there are those who find their choice of candidate disconcerting. About 33% of Trump supporters and 37% of Biden supporters admit that their candidate of choice is embarrassing.
According to the research, Trump is the preferred candidate among voters who are 50 years and older, garnering 48% of their support compared to Biden’s 39%. Biden, however, leads among voters under 30, securing the support of 48% compared to Trump’s 28%.
In terms of race and ethnicity, Biden holds a commanding lead over Trump among Black voters (64% versus 13%), while Trump has an advantage among White voters (50% to 36% for Biden). Hispanic voters appear divided with support evenly split between Trump and Biden(36% each).
Interestingly, among voters who backed Biden in 2020, 14% now say they would vote for Kennedy in a two-way race, while 8% of Trump’s 2020 voters say they would vote for Kennedy.
There is a significant dissatisfaction expressed by voters about the 2024 presidential campaign. According to Pew Research Center, 87% of voters feel that the campaign so far does not make them feel proud of the country, a staggering 76% say it is not focused on important policy debates and 68% describe the campaign as too negative. Trump supporters are far more satisfied with their choices than are either Biden or Kennedy supporters.
As the 2024 election approached, it’s clear that the race is still very much up for grabs. The perceived mental sharpness of a candidate is proving to be a significant factor affecting voters’ choices, and it appears that many are not fully content with the options on the table.
