Understanding Safety: Where Does Your City Stand?

Hey there, friendly neighbors! Have you ever stopped to think about how safe your city really is? While we often hear about violence and crime across the nation, it’s easy to believe that such things only happen far away. But safety is something that affects all of us in one way or another, and for many people, feeling secure in their homes and communities is of utmost importance.

The Study that Sparked the Conversation

Recently, a study conducted by WalletHub took a closer look at the safety of nearly 200 cities across the United States. The researchers wanted to find out which cities made their residents feel the safest. Using an array of data points—including traffic deaths, assault rates, unemployment levels, and the percentage of people without health insurance—they ranked cities from safest to least safe.

So, Where Are the Safest Cities?

Drumroll, please! Topping the list was South Burlington, Vermont, known for its friendly neighbors and low crime rates. Not far behind were lovely places like Casper, Wyoming, Warwick, Rhode Island, Burlington, Vermont, and Boise, Idaho. These cities not only boast low crime statistics, but many residents also feel a solid sense of community and trust amongst their neighbors.

Which Cities Should You Approach With Caution?

Now, let’s flip the coin and look at the less safe cities. Unfortunately, Memphis, Tennessee found itself at the bottom of this list, ranking at a concerning number 182. Alongside Memphis, other larger cities such as Detroit, Michigan, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans also struggled to provide residents with a sense of safety.

Tennessee has three other cities making the list as well—Knoxville at 127, Nashville at 147, and Chattanooga at 158. Although these cities have their charm and strong points, safety remains a concern for many inhabitants.

How to Feel Safer in Your Own Community

No one should have to live in constant worry about their safety. Luckily, there are some practical steps you can take at home to enhance your sense of security. According to some reliable sources, the first step is considering a security system. These systems have come a long way and can be set up wirelessly, making them both affordable and convenient. A simple, effective solution is a doorbell camera that lets you see who’s at your door—long gone are the days of wonder and worry!

Another great way to foster a safer environment is to get to know your neighbors. You don’t need to become best buddies, but having a friendly face next door can work wonders for your comfort level. Establishing a neighborhood watch or simply looking out for one another creates a stronger, safer community.

Proactive Measures Can Make a Difference

Lastly, why not tap into some detective skills? Take a walk around your property and analyze it as if you were an intruder. Are there hidden spots or trouble areas that could use better lighting? Finding ways to secure those points can give you some peace of mind. Plus, consider devising an exit plan in case of an emergency. It might sound daunting, but being prepared helps you feel more in control.
