Exciting Developments in Memphis: United Housing Inc. Set to Move to a New HQ!

Memphis is buzzing with news that is sure to uplift the community! Local nonprofit United Housing Inc. (UHI) is making big strides by preparing to move into a brand-new office space next spring, thanks to a generous grant from the Tennessee Housing Development Agency (THDA).

The Big Grant

Recently, UHI scored a whopping $410,000 grant from THDA’s Capacity Building Program. What does that mean for the organization? It means they’re all set to renovate a property that was generously donated to them last year! This property, located at 2509 Harvard Ave. in Binghampton, is an 78-year-old building known as Caritas Village, which UHI received in 2022. Just imagine the transformation this old gem is going to undergo!

Current Operations

As it stands, United Housing is currently working remotely, a situation many of us can relate to after the challenges of the past few years. However, this move signals a refreshing change as they look to bring their 17 dedicated employees into a space designed for collaboration and improved service delivery.

A Vision for the Future

UHI’s executive director, Amy Schaftlein, expressed her excitement about the move. She stated, “UHI’s relocation to Binghampton signifies our unwavering commitment to meet families and individuals where they are in the community.” This is such a positive step towards bringing their services closer to the people who need them the most!

She also noted that the new building will not only enhance their proximity to clients but also expand their facilities. With more space, they can deepen their capacity to provide enhanced services to homebuyers and residents, and that’s fantastic news for Memphis.

The Bigger Picture

The THDA’s Capacity Building Program is a vital resource for nonprofits engaged in housing development. The funds are primarily sourced from the Tennessee Housing Trust Fund and are designed to help organizations construct, acquire, or rehabilitate office spaces. This initiative not only boosts operational efficiency for nonprofits but also elevates their ability to serve the surrounding communities effectively.

THDA’s executive director, Ralph Perrey, emphasized the importance of these funds by stating, “These capacity building funds will help nonprofit organizations like United Housing make improvements to their operations that will allow them to more efficiently serve their clients and the communities where they are located.” It’s reassuring to see strategic support for nonprofits focusing on community development!

Looking Forward

Currently, UHI is aiming to complete renovations and officially open its doors by spring 2025. Certainly, the Memphis community is keen to welcome back UHI in a reinvigorated home. With this move, they’re positioning themselves not only to deliver better services but also to create a more stable and nurturing environment for all Memphis residents looking for housing assistance.

This renovation and relocation is more than just a change of address; it’s a reaffirmation of United Housing’s mission to uplift the community and empower individuals and families striving for better living conditions. This is a great step forward for Memphis, and we can’t wait to see how this all unfolds. Keep your eyes peeled for more updates as UHI embarks on this exciting journey!
