Suspected Vehicular Homicide Offender Caught, But Emotional Turmoil Persists for Victims’ Relatives

Capture of the Accused

We bring you the latest update from the city of Memphis where a suspect, accused of hitting and killing two men with her car in 2022, was captured by U.S. Marshals in Colorado last week; she now awaits extradition to Tennessee. The unfortunate and horrific accident occurred on September 29, 2022, claiming the lives of two brothers, Elvin Nuñez and Roberto Nuñez.

The Nuñez brothers had been engaged in their routine work, roofing a house on North White Station Road and Sequoia Avenue just before the tragedy struck. Elvin Nuñez was instantly killed in the crash while his brother, Roberto Nuñez, was critically injured and consequently died at Regional One Health 42 days later.

Suspect’s Charges

67-year old Tracy Totty, is the prime suspect in the case who was indicted in state court on August 4, 2023, on charges of vehicular homicide-intoxication, aggravated vehicular homicide, and vehicular homicide-reckless.

In the Midst of Low Pedestrian Fatalities

Elvin Nuñez was among the 87 pedestrian casualties reported in Shelby County in 2022, according to information provided by the Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security. The number of pedestrian fatalities fell to 60 in 2023 and has remained at 21 so far in 2024. The ongoing data accounts for deaths that occur within 30 days following a crash, hence Roberto Nuñez’s death was not included in the 2022 statistics.

Continued Pain for the Bereaved

Katina Nuñez, the widowed wife of late Elvin Nuñez, still holds tightly onto a photograph of her husband who was tragically killed in the pedestrian accident two years ago. While the arrest of the suspect brings some relief and justice, the emotional wounds of losing a loved one remain open.
