News Summary

As Memphis prepares for a severe cold snap, local officials have announced two emergency warming centers. The Hospitality Hub will provide shelter for single women and families, while First Baptist Church will cater to single men and couples. Transportation assistance is available through the Memphis Area Transit Authority. Residents are encouraged to utilize these centers as temperatures are predicted to plunge into the mid-20s, with wind chill making it feel even colder.

Warm Up, Memphis! Emergency Warming Centers Open for Arctic Chill

As our beloved city of Memphis braces for an unexpected plunge into the deep freeze, local officials have made it a priority to ensure that everyone has a warm place to stay. Two emergency warming centers are set to open this Saturday at 9 p.m., ahead of an anticipated arctic blast that will send temperatures tumbling to chilling lows.

Where to Go for Warmth?

The first warming center will be situated at the Hospitality Hub, located at 590 Washington Ave. in Downtown Memphis. This center is dedicated to offering shelter for single women and families, providing a welcoming and safe environment as the temperatures drop.

The second option, First Baptist Church, can be found at 200 East Parkway North. This location will cater to single men and couples, ensuring that those in need of shelter have a cozy spot to escape the freezing temperatures.

Need a Ride? We’re Here to Help!

If you’re feeling the chill and need transportation to these warming centers, simply call the Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) at 901-297-1680. They’ll begin operations at 8:30 p.m. to help you reach warmth.

Cold Forecast Ahead

So, what’s the weather got in store for us? Bitterly cold temperatures are making their debut early Sunday morning, with lows predicted to hover around the mid-20s. By early Monday, it will feel downright frigid as temperatures are forecasted to plummet to an eye-watering 14 to 15 degrees! Add in the wind chill, and we could be looking at real-feel temperatures sinking down into the single digits.

This icy blast isn’t a one-night stand, either! The cold weather is expected to hang around until Wednesday afternoon, giving residents ample opportunity to visit the warming centers—especially since there’s little, if any, precipitation on the horizon.

What Can You Expect at the Centers?

When you arrive at the warming centers, you’ll find a welcoming atmosphere along with essential services. The centers are prepared to offer sack meals and blankets, but remember, supplies are limited. Guests will need to check in upon arrival, but IDs are not required—just a warm heart and a desire to stay cozy!

Regular Shelters Still Available

It’s important to note that these warming centers are intended as emergency shelters, which means they won’t replace the regular shelter services already available in the community. If you or someone you know requires food assistance or a place to stay overnight, local shelters are open and ready to help.

Additional Options Nearby

For those who may be near the border, there are additional warming options available in nearby Olive Branch, MS. Facilities such as the Church of the Harvest and the Southaven Community Safe Room are also prepared to support anyone in need of shelter from the cold.

The freezing conditions are no joke, and taking care of each other is what the community is all about. So if you or someone you know is in need during this arctic blast, don’t hesitate to make use of these warming centers. Stay warm, Memphis!
