MEMPHIS, Tenn. – As winter approaches, many families begin to fret about how they will keep their children warm. This season, however, some kids at Schools of Perea can breathe a little easier thanks to generous donations from a wonderful non-profit organization called Operation Warm.
Founded back in 1998, Operation Warm has been on a heartwarming mission to provide winter coats and shoes to children in underserved communities across America. Recently, they joined forces with FedEx to ensure that every student at Schools of Perea receives a coat, making those winter chill worries a thing of the past.
In a touching event that felt like the holiday season had come early, kids lit up with joy as they received their brand-new coats. “It feels like the holidays have come early, just to see their eyes light up,” remarked Tarsha Cannon, Senior Account Manager at Operation Warm. It’s moments like these that truly highlight the spirit of giving and kindness.
The response from the school was equally heartwarming. Tia James, Principal of Schools of Perea, couldn’t contain her gratitude. “My heart goes out to them. I’m thankful to be chosen—that our students were able to get these coats today,” she said. Clearly, these deliveries were more than just coats; they symbolize hope and support for the students in Memphis.
Now, what makes these coats so significant? As a charter school located in the Klondike neighborhood of North Memphis, Schools of Perea serves preschool and elementary students. Principal James emphasized that having a warm coat not only helps students stay cozy on chilly mornings but can also impact their performance in school. “That can affect them academically if they don’t have what they need to come to school,” she noted.
Since 2016, FedEx has played a pivotal role in this initiative, having gifted over 100,000 coats and shoes to children that need them the most. And good news for all: there are even more giveaways planned for this fall and winter!
“I know that they can’t wait to go home and show mom and dad their new coats that they get to wear for winter,” Principal James added with a smile. It’s fantastic to know that these children will step outside, warm and ready to face whatever the cold has to offer.

As Halloween approaches, be mindful of a Level 1 alert for gusty winds and potential heavy rain throughout Halloween night on Thursday. So make sure to have those umbrellas handy while you’re out trick-or-treating!
All in all, Memphis, it’s a season filled with warmth—not just from winter coats but from the community coming together to ensure that our children feel loved and supported. Let’s keep spreading that warmth!
