News Summary

Women in Memphis Music (WiMM) marks its third anniversary by supporting female musicians in a male-dominated scene. Founded by Miz Stefani during the pandemic, WiMM aims to uplift women artists through showcases, events, and community building. The organization has already made significant contributions to the local music culture by hosting memorable events and encouraging collaboration among women musicians. Looking ahead, WiMM plans to continue providing resources and opportunities for emerging artists while fostering an inclusive community for all.

Hello, Memphis Music Lovers!

Guess what? Women in Memphis Music (WiMM) is celebrating three fantastic years of supporting female and female-identifying musicians, and they’re turning up the volume just in time for Women’s History Month! This organization has been a game changer, providing a much-needed platform for women artists in a music scene that’s often been dominated by male acts.

The Spark of an Idea

The journey of WiMM began during the challenging times of 2020 and 2021 when the founder, Miz Stefani, noticed a concerning trend—a striking absence of female acts in local venue listings. Despite knowing countless talented female musicians, she wondered why they weren’t being showcased. With her experience running a successful live-streamed show in New York, Miz knew Memphis deserved something similar.

The Big Launch

And just like that, in March 2022, WiMM officially launched with its inaugural showcase at BSIDE! It was an incredible start, showcasing the talents of female musicians and setting the tone for what was to come. Today, Miz Stefani continues to lead this one-woman initiative, collaborating with passionate local contributors who share the mission of uplifting the voices of women in music.

An Uplifting Mission

WiMM stands on a strong foundation: to highlight and uplift female and female-identifying musicians while creating a supportive community for all. This mission is more than just words; over the past three years, WiMM has made waves by hosting memorable events, like the celebration of Carla Thomas’ impressive 81st birthday and an electrifying all-female-fronted music festival featuring a variety of diverse artists.

Building Connections

But wait, there’s more! WiMM encourages collaborations among women musicians, promoting a sense of camaraderie and unity that’s essential in any creative community. They firmly believe that when women come together, magic happens, and the local music scene can become a shining example of collective talent.

Discover New Talent

Interested in checking out some amazing performances? WiMM has a YouTube page where you can browse three years’ worth of archived shows. It’s a treasure trove waiting for you to dive in and discover some incredible new artists who might become your next favorites!

What’s Next for WiMM?

Looking ahead, WiMM has exciting plans on the horizon. They aim to host monthly showcases, fun happy hours, and even workshops designed to amplify women’s presence in the Memphis music scene. It’s all about providing resources and opportunities for up-and-coming musicians to thrive. WMM’s vision is to create a lasting legacy that builds on Memphis’s rich musical history, especially given the city’s background of influential female artists.
